Approximately 75 guests gathered to mark Giornata della Memoria (Holocaust Remembrance Day) at a moving event organized by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit and the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan.
The evening opened with remarks from the newly appointed Italian Consul in Detroit, Paolo Zanotto, who shared the powerful story of a family’s resistance in Nazi-occupied Padua. His talk honored the courage of the Martini Sisters and their clandestine aid network, centered at the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, which helped rescue hundreds of persecuted individuals and guide them to safety in Switzerland.
Following the presentation, attendees viewed the film Elena del ghetto, directed by Stefano Casertano. The screening deeply moved the audience, offering an intimate and emotional portrayal that reinforced the importance of remembrance and historical awareness.
Observed globally on January 27, Giornata della Memoria honors the victims of the Holocaust and those who suffered under Italy’s Racial Laws and Nazi occupation during World War II. Events like this play a vital role in preserving memory, fostering education, and reaffirming our shared responsibility to promote tolerance, dignity, and peace.
The organizers extend their sincere thanks to all who attended and contributed to making the evening a meaningful moment of reflection and community.
