A Journey Through Linguistic Diversity in Italy
A Mosaic of Dialects – Presented by Alessandra Cuzzocrea
Explore the fascinating world of Italophony—the global spread of the Italian language, enriched by its rich history, migration, and cultural heritage.
While Standard Italian—rooted in Tuscan and immortalized by Dante Alighieri—is the country’s official language, Italy remains a tapestry of dialects: Neapolitan, Sicilian, Venetian, Sardinian, and many more. These regional tongues, still vibrant especially among older generations, embody centuries of local identity and tradition.
Beyond Italy, Italian is spoken in Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City, and Malta, and thrives in global communities across Argentina, Brazil, the USA, and Australia. With over 70 million native speakers and millions more studying it worldwide, Italian remains a language of art, fashion, cuisine, and cultural prestige.
In an era of globalization, celebrating Italian and its dialects means preserving a heritage of linguistic richness and regional pride.
Join us in celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Italian language!
You are welcome to share your experience.
Light refreshments will be served.
~~Established in 2001, the Week of the Italian Language in the World is organized every year by the diplomatic-consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes in coordination with traditional partners for linguistic promotion: the Ministry of Education and Merit, the Ministry of University and Research, the Ministry of Culture, the Swiss Embassy, the Accademia della Crusca, Cepell, CGIE, the Italophone Radio and Television Community, RAI, the Dante Alighieri Society, and Treccani.”
Under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic.
