Film Screening: L’ultima volta che siamo stati bambini | “The Last Time We Were Children” by Claudio Bisio – (106 minutes)
Rome, Summer 1943. Four children play war while the bombs of the actual war explode around them. Italo is the wealthy son of Federale, Cosimo has a father who is in confinement and an ancestral hunger, Vanda is an orphan and a believer, Riccardo comes from a wealthy Jewish family. They are different, but they don’t know it, and between them, “the greatest friendship in the world” is born. But, on October 16, Riccardo is taken away by the Germans together with over a thousand people from the Jewish ghetto. The three friends think they know where he is and decide to find him and free their friend. After them, two adults set off to bring them home: Agnese, a nun from Vanda’s orphanage, and Vittorio, Italo’s brother. The double journey of children and adults in war-torn Italy will be a life-changing experience capable of imprinting its seal on all the characters involved.

Il “Giorno della Memoria,” or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed globally on January 27th. This day is a poignant reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust. It serves as a time to remember and honor those who suffered persecution under the Racial Laws imposed by the Fascist government in Italy and during the Nazi occupation in World War II. The commemoration by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit and the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan is a respectful tribute to the Italian victims of this dark historical period. Such observances play a crucial role in educating people about the past, ensuring that the memories of the victims are preserved, and promoting a message of tolerance and peace to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
