Film Screening:  “Terezin”, by Italian director Gabriele Guidi.

“Terezin” follows the story of Antonio, an Italian clarinetist, and Martina, a Czechoslovak violinist. They fall in love during World War II.
Shortly afterward, they will be deported to the Terezin ghetto, where their love story is intertwined with the incredible stories of the many Central European Jewish artists and intellectuals.

The event will take place at the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan
30400 Telegraph Road – Ste. 150
Bingham Farms, MI 48025

~~Rail transport records indicate that between 1941 and 1945, around 145,000 Jews (including 5,000 children) were deported to Terezin. More than 33,000 died in the ghetto due to the poor living conditions alone from disease, deprivation, and starvation; over 88,000 were then deported to the Eastern ghettos and extermination camps. By the time the war ended, only 17,247 prisoners had managed to survive.
During her detention in Terezin, Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, a talented Austrian art teacher, began a drawing class for the detained children.
The result was a collection of over 4.387 drawings hidden in suitcases, only found years after the ghetto’s liberation.
Today, they are displayed in the Jewish Museum in Prague and Beit Terezin, a Kibbutz Givat Haim (Israel) institution. They represent an extraordinary testimony of ghetto life through children’s eyes.

Il “Giorno della Memoria,” or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed globally on January 27th. This day is a poignant reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust. It serves as a time to remember and honor those who suffered persecution under the Racial Laws imposed by the Fascist government in Italy and during the Nazi occupation in World War II.
The commemoration by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit and the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan is a respectful tribute to the Italian victims of this dark historical period. Such observances play a crucial role in educating people about the past, ensuring that the memories of the victims are preserved, and promoting a message of tolerance and peace to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
