Christie Lynn Caputo is a photographer based in Detroit, MI. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013. She is currently a member and student of the Dante Alighieri Society and is working on obtaining dual Italian-American citizenship through her family bloodline. In the spring of 2024, Christie spent ten weeks immersing herself in and documenting Soveria Simeri (near Catanzaro), the Calabrian town her grandparents immigrated from in the 1930s. By meeting relatives and artisans of the city, she explored and captured her family roots while honoring the town filled with genuine Calabrian hospitality, charm, resilience, and strength. It isn’t only a project based on her family but a celebration of Calabria’s culture, history, future, and the people who make it what it is.
While this glimpse of Calabria is through the lens of Soveria Simeri, the artist’s goal is to return and document more of this rich southern Italian culture. She is planning her next visit for this September. If you have any resources or want to be involved with this ongoing documentary series, Christie can be contacted at www.christielcaputo.com
